To finish a hand needs about four days. He is a sculptors son and he wanted to become an artist too. But he was not lucky at the admission exams for art school. Meanwhile his art is requested. His clients are from all over the world.
There is no school to study his profession. He learned his skills by himself.
There are less than a dozen craftsmen like him all over Europe, who are able to manufacture life-like artificial limbs. Absolute perfection and a passion for imperfection is requested to accomplish the illusion of a real hand. Up to the moment you shake it.
To put down the new glasfiber cabels is done quickly, but then work begins.
Each of the hair thin fibers has to be connected correctly. It`s a tedious work in the middle of noisy streets in any weather condition. Concentration is essential, a single mistake would create a confusing situation.
The kitchen team is international. Every day they prepare about hundred meals, for the inhabitants and the employees of a retirement home.
Their chef has given up his career in the top class gastronomy for this job. Now he wants to provide a good formation to his apprentices.
Neben 10 gesetzlichen Feiertagen be- steht Anspruch auf 20 Ferientage.
The melting furnace burns night and day. Gas is very expensive. His employees are dreaming about earning enough money to afford a workshop of their own one day.
There is a point you have to make your decision: art or craftsmanship. To manage all this beautiful and sofisticated old technics in glassworks is an art for itself. Good ideas and good craftmaship, it`s impossible to achive both. For this he decided to be a craftsman and not an artist.
The good ideas he leaves to the artists. With some of them he collaborates since many years.
The new construction project of the Berlin City Palace, which replaces the demolished Palace of the Republic, deserves to be a matter of controversy. The building, which is going to be a hybrid of concrete slab construction and exact replica of the baroque facades of the palace blasted by the GDR authorities in 1950, implements a neo-imperialistic gesture, the more as it shall host the so called Humboldtforum, an ethnographic museum with the huge Prussian collection of crafted artifacts from all over the world.
You can also study the reconstruction of baroque ornamentation under the perspective of ethnographic artifact. As well as Melanesian woodcarving, Turkmen embroidery or Cameroonian beadwork it raises questions about the desire of beauty in ornamental work - and about the living and working conditions in which these objects got manufactured. The new construction of the palace coincides with a period of meteoric development. The conjunction of digital technologies and ancient craftsmanship opens completely new perspectives. While all premodern technical skills and styles got abandoned in Western German art schools, they used to stay an important part of artistic formation in GDR. From this results a paradox: The symbolic execution of the GDR – the replacement of a socialist building by a neo-feudal palace – can only be realized thanks to the skills of artists and sculptors, who got their education in GDR and who have to assert themselves now in a very competitive market. The videotableaux document these artists and sculptors at work. Always filmed with fixed camera position and without cut for the duration of one hour, they give an impression of the time-based dimension of work. The working conditions of the portrayed are sketched by short texts.
